Just before 8 p.m. police were dispatched to the report of a car struck by a train at Felton St. and River Rd.

Upon arrival, police found a Dodge pickup truck that had been struck by an Amtrak train.

Three individuals were discovered inside the car, including a 69-year-old male, a 66-year-old female and a 6-year-old male.

Police have said the people were trapped inside the car and needed extrication.

First-responders also performed life-saving efforts on the three victims, however, they were pronounced dead at the scene.

In a statement released Saturday, officials said members of the North Tonawanda Police and Fire Department made “every effort” to help save the lives of the three individuals.

The identities of the individuals that were in the car have yet to be released.

Shocking images of the crash show the vehicle struck by the train as at least half a dozen first responders stand around the truck.

The front windshield of the vehicle appears to be completely shattered, while the truck appears to be tilted slightly.

An object that looks similar to a car door can be seen on the ground near the vehicle.

Amtrak has confirmed that train No. 281 was involved in the collision, telling NBC affiliate WGRZ that the train was traveling south from Niagara Falls to New York City.

"There have been no reported injuries to the 21 passengers or crew onboard,” the company told the outlet.

“Amtrak is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident.”

Mayor Autin Tylec also told WGRZ that the vehicle was dragged several hundred feet once it was struck.

Several people nearby witnessed the accident and are reportedly speaking with North Tonawanda Police as part of the investigation.

Police have said peer counseling and mental health resources are available for anyone who might need them.

The North Tonawanda Police Department has also asked for individuals to respect the privacy of the victim’s families and first responders who arrived on the scene.

Police have not revealed a direct cause for the crash.

WGRZ reported that North Tonawanda police declined to provide any information as to why the vehicle had been on the train tracks.

The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
