( May 20, 2024 ) The softball team outlasted Atlantis Charter School for a 20-17 victory at home Saturday, wrapping up a busy week for the Whalers that saw them win four games in five days.

Nantucket led 14-7 entering the top of the sixth inning, when the Tritons did the bulk of their scoring to pull ahead 17-14. The Whalers answered Atlantis Charter’s 10-run inning with six runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to regain the lead and take home the win, improving their record to 8-4 on the season.

Sydney Ard had a standout day at the plate for Nantucket. The senior hit for the cycle with a single, double, triple and home run, along with a walk in the sixth inning, scoring four runs.

Allyson Escobar also scored four runs out of the lead-off spot, reaching base twice via hit by pitch, along with a double and a walk.

Seren Cristler pitched all seven innings on the mound for Nantucket, striking out 13 batters while throwing over 100 pitches in the victory.

The Whalers hit the road Monday to face Nauset, where they will play a road game and will complete Nantucket’s season opener against the Warriors, which was suspended in the fifth inning with the Whalers trailing 12-7.

Nantucket needs just one more win to guarantee a .500 record on the season and clinch a spot in the Div. 4 state tournament.
