Kings of Leon dropped its ninth studio album, Can We Please Have Fun, on May 10, and two band members just joined Audacy before heading off to Europe this summer to kickstart a new tour.

Kings of Leon is a family affair. The band comprises brothers Caleb Followill, Jared Followill and Nathan Followill joined by their cousin, Matthew Followill. The family has expanded with kids in the mix now, and they all will be hitting the road together. “Everybody goes. It’s so fun. It’s like we couldn’t do it if it wasn’t like that. It’s basically a European vacation and we play some shows, so it’s great,” Matthew told Audacy’s Dallas .

Nathan’s family will be accompanying the band on tour as well. “It’s like working from home. You get to be Clark Griswold for a few weeks and it’s nice,” the drummer said.

This upcoming tour should be filled with tons of joy and excitement given the latest album’s moniker. Can We Please Have Fun is the group’s first record with Capitol Records, marking a new era for the band.

The last track on the new album, “Seen,” is the song garnering quite a bit of traction among fans right now, which the band didn’t fully see coming. “We loved it when we first recorded it, but you live with something for a year, and I don’t know it was just totally unexpected. I think maybe we expected that people would love and like 'Nowhere to Run' because it's kind of singly. Yeah, I don’t know, it’s amazing. I love it so much. We’re so excited to play it and go on the road and tour it,” Matthew said.

The guitarist also theorized about the reasoning behind the surprise success of “Seen.” He related the fact that the song is the last on the record to the notion that people tend to enjoy something more when they feel like they discovered it themselves.

He argued it’s similar to the pride one feels when he or she is the first to introduce the friend group to a great indie band. Not everyone always listens to an album all the way through, so for those who made it to track 12 on Can We Please Have Fun, they feel as though they discovered a hidden gem. “There’s something we struck gold with there,” Matthew said.

“Seen” has picked up so much steam that Kings of Leon released a visualizer for it. The visualizer features the band in a dark room with illuminated shadows. At various times throughout the visualizer, each member of the band is individually highlighted with a spotlight while the others remain as glowing figures. The lyrics are present as well for fans to practice singing along ahead of the tour.

Kings of Leon will kick things off in the United Kingdom on June 20 and continue playing shows throughout Europe before heading back home to start the American leg of the tour in August. In the meantime, check out our full interview with Matthew and Nathan above.
