Music will ring through the rafters of Clatskanie Middle/High School on May 21, as members of the CMHS Concert Band, CHS Choir, and CHS Jazz Band will perform for their annual Spring Concert and award ceremony.

The concert will take place at the Donovan Wooley Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. on May 21, and is a free event to attend.

The concert band consists of the middle school band (17 members) and seven of the horn and percussion players from the high school Jazz Band. The choir has seven members and the Jazz Band has 11, according to Band/Music/Fine Arts Teacher Jamie Erwin.

With this performance bring the musical spring season to a close, Erwin said she has been proud of each program's growth this year.

"I'm very proud of all the groups. The Middle School Group has just been outstanding this year," Erwin said. "They have played with the high school in a HS District Festival, in their own middle school festival, and with the 6th grade Clatskanie Elementary School band for the Developing Band Festival. They've been playing a range of music and will be playing for graduation."

Erwin said the choir at CMHS is "small, but mighty" and that they have improved drastically throughout the year. The size of the choir also allowed for some unique opportunities.

"Because they are so small, we were able to do different things like join the Community Choir, solos and duets, and small group songs," Erwin said. "Their last song at the concert will be featuring our seniors and at graduation they will perform it with alumni. Tear jerker for sure!"

The high school band has been juggling different musical styles during the year, as Erwin said the high school band has been doing concert and jazz band all year.

"It's been a lot of music and the two different styles have kept us on our toes! They qualified to go to State Ensemble as a large woodwind group," Erwin said. "The entire band participated in that concert band song - the guitar players learned percussion parts. It was an amazing experience and they played really well! We have 5 seniors graduating this year and it will be a huge loss to our program."

In addition to showcasing the music program's hard work over the year, there will also be awards handed out to recognize the hard work of the students. Middle School Awards include Most Improved, MVP, and Most Inspirational. The High School includes Director Awards, National Choral Award, John Philip Sousa Award, Louis Armstrong Awards, and the Clatskanie Music Award.
