Cut grass cannot be in Virginia roads or streets

Don't let grass get in the streets or roads when cutting the grass this spring and summer. In Virginia, this is illegal and falls under the Code of Virginia § 18.2-324. Throwing or depositing certain substances upon the highway; removal of such chemicals.

Lawn Care Grandpa says grass clippings can clog drains and become slippery when wet. Someone could fall, or car tires could slide on the grass. This also causes problems for motorcycle riders.

WSET13 spoke to the Vinton, Virginia Police Department, which said that leaving grass clippings on the road is a Class 1 Misdemeanor based on the above state code. VPD says no one may throw or deposit any substance onto a road that creates a hazard to the traveling public.
