Governor Walz Signs Bill Eliminating Junk Fees in Minnesota

    2024-05-22

In a move aimed at safeguarding consumer rights and promoting fair business practices, Governor Tim Walz has signed a groundbreaking bill that will eliminate junk fees imposed by companies across various industries.

    An End to Hidden Costs

The new legislation, officially known as Chapter 111, House File 3438, addresses the widespread issue of hidden and deceptive fees that have been costing the average Minnesota family more than $3,000 annually.

These junk fees, often tacked on by companies like food delivery apps, hotels, and ticket sellers, have long been a source of frustration for consumers.

    Upfront Disclosure Mandate

Under the provisions of the bill, companies will be required to disclose the full price of a product, including all mandatory fees, at the beginning of the transaction and in any advertising.

This measure aims to provide clarity and transparency for consumers, ensuring they have a clear understanding of the total cost before making a purchase.

    Cracking Down on Deceptive Practices

The bill also prohibits companies from charging fees that do not align with any additional product or service.

This provision targets deceptive practices where companies impose arbitrary charges without providing tangible value to the consumer.

    Bipartisan Effort and Advocacy

The historic legislation was spearheaded by bill authors Senator Lindsey Port and Representative Emma Greenman, who worked in close collaboration with consumer advocates to address this longstanding issue.

    Quotes from Leaders

"Minnesotans value transparency, which is why we're putting an end to junk fees on everything from food and entertainment to hotels and credit card fees," said Governor Walz. "This bill is going to protect Minnesotans' bottom line, provide clarity for consumers, and ensure companies aren't using deceptive practices to rip their customers off."

"Hidden junk fees tacked on by companies like food delivery apps, hotels, and ticket sellers can cost families thousands of dollars a year," added Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan. "This important piece of legislation will protect Minnesotans from deceptive practices and save them real money."

With the signing of this bill, Minnesota has taken a significant step toward ensuring fair and transparent business practices, empowering consumers with the information they need to make informed decisions and protecting their hard-earned money from hidden costs.

Does this include all the BS FEES attached to our cable, Xcel, phone, internet and credit card bills? We are being charged additional fees on our energy bills to pay for EV CHARGING STATIONS.
