Primo , the coming-of-age comedy inspired by the life of author/journalist/former teacher Shea Serrano, has been cancelled at Freevee after just one eight-episode season.

Serrano — who created the series and served as an executive producer alongside Michael Schur, David Miner, Morgan Sackett, Peter Murrieta and Lisa Muse Bryant — shared the sad news on social media, almost exactly one year after the show’s May 2023 binge release.

Hailing “a short but beautiful run,” Serrano wrote on Tuesday, “ sadly we’re not gonna be making any more episodes of PRIMO.

“I will always be indebted to everyone who worked on the show to make it so great and I will always be thankful to everyone who watched and championed it,” Serrano continued. “Thank you for real — long live PRIMO.”

The single-camera, semi-autobiographical comedy followed Rafa Gonzales (played by newcomer Ignacio Diaz-Silverio), a wide-eyed 16-year-old being raised by his clever mother, Drea ( United We Fall ‘s Christina Vidal), and his five overbearing uncles as they live their lives on the south side of San Antonio, Texas.

Primo also starred Johnny Rey Diaz ( Grey’s Anatomy ), Henri Esteve ( grown-ish ), Martin Martinez ( Magnum P.I. ), Jonathan Medina ( Walker Independence ), Carlos Santos ( Gentefied ), Nigel Siwabessy, Efrain Villa ( Better Call Saul ), and Stakiah Lynn Washington.
