The 2024 Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) state baseball tournament is upon us. Both Marshall and Waterloo will compete in Sectional 3 of Division 3. The Pirates of Waterloo earned the No. 4 seed while Marshall is the No. 6 seed.

Waterloo earned its seeding with a 14-7 overall record, including a 6-4 mark for third in the final Capitol - South conference standings. The Pirates won their first eight games of the season and enjoyed another four-game winning streak later on. The regular season ended on a sour note, however, with four consecutive losses.

The Pirates will have the benefit of playing at the friendly confines of Waterloo Fireman's Park to open WIAA regional play. They'll host No. 13 seed Necedah on Thursday, May 23.

It's been a tough spring for the winless Cardinals, which went 0-13 in the Scenic Bluffs conference and 0-14 overall. They share no common opponents with Waterloo from the regular season. The winner of that regional opener will advance to face the winner of No. 5 seed New Glarus and No. 12 seed Nekoosa.

Marshall also earned a home game to open regional play thanks to a 7-13 record in the regular season. This included an even 5-5 mark in Capitol - South conference play to finish in fourth place. The Cardinals enter the postseason on a tough seven-game losing streak.

They'll host No. 11 seed Parkview to open WIAA regional play. The Vikings struggled to a 2-19 record in the regular season, including a 2-12 mark in the Trailways - South conference. The two share a common opponent from the regular season, Deerfield. Marshall beat the Demons 12-4 back on April 10. Parkview couldn't keep up with their conference rival, losing 11-0 in the first meeting and 15-0 in the second.

The Cardinals will host the Vikings at Marshall High School on Thursday, May 23. The winner of that game advances to face No. 3 seed Deerfield, which earned a first round bye, on Tuesday, May 28.
