No one who follows Minnetonka High boys track was surprised to see senior captain Tobias Williams win three events in state True Team competition May 17 at Stillwater High School.

Williams’ wins in the 100- and 200-meter dashes and the long jump propelled Minnetonka to third place in the 12-team event. The Skipper supported their leader with some other impressive performances. The only teams to finish ahead of Minnetonka were champion Mounds View and runner-up Blaine.

Williams’ top performance of the day was a winning long jump of 23 feet, 4 inches for a new personal record. His 100-meter dash time of 10.83 gave him a close victory over Blaine’s Jamaeron Douglas, and in the 200-meter dash, Williams won a photo finish from Edina sophomore Cooper Drake - 22.17 to 22.20.

Minnetonka senior Will Hairston joined Williams as one of the top sprinters of the day, taking fourth place in the 400 with a time of 50.32. Hairston had eighth-place finishes in the 100- and 200-meter dashes.

Senior Tyler Vos of the Skippers and his sophomore teammate, Sean Fries, starred in the 3200-meter run by taking first and second places. Vos ran 9:40.50 and Fries was only a step and a half behind in 9:15.31. Vos placed fourth in the 1600 with his time of 4:20.73 and Sean Fries took seventh place.

Minnetonka had second-place finishes in the 4x200 and 4x400 relays.

Moving to field events, Minnetonka’s highlight was, of course, Williams’ victory in the long jump. Teammate Grady Giebenhain long jumped 21-11 for third place and Skipper teammate Parker Christensen took seventh place.

Christensen had an impact in the high jump, taking third place with a best of 6 feet, 2 inches. Captain Tanner Smith led the Skippers in the discus, throwing 136 feet, 5 inches for 10th place.

Brandon Kellett led the Skippers in the pole vault with a best of 12 feet. Teammate Walker Stone cleared 11 feet.
