Organized team activities (OTAs) are underway and the 49ers have a few absences. There were no major surprises, but two of their veteran receivers in Brandon Aiyuk and Jauan Jennings were out with unresolved contract questions.

Aiyuk’s situation will bear monitoring as he seeks a mammoth contract extension. Jennings, meanwhile, has yet to sign his restricted free agent tender. Those two are notable in that they have unresolved contract questions, though Jennings has almost no leverage in his situation.

Kyle Shanahan was asked how he felt about Aiyuk's situation and responded without saying much of note.

"Same as I do about all these guys that aren't here," Shanahan said. "I mean, I wish they were here. But it's something that's part of the business and anytime it's part of the business part, you try to respect it. Stay out of it as much as possible and look forward to the days when we just focus on football."

Also absent from the first portion of OTAs were Trent Williams, Christian McCaffrey, Charvarius Ward and Maliek Collins. Ward underwent core muscle surgery and Collins will report after his kids graduate for the year. Shanahan was relatively mum on all the absences, saying that he would like everyone to be present, but understands that it's the mandatory portion of the offseason activities.

The most notable presence was that of Nick Bosa, who rarely participated in OTAs his career. Deebo Samuel was also involved, sporting an eyesore No. 1, resplendent with jokes from Kyle Shanahan with a reporter about whether or not it was in fact “slimming.”

"I think it looks good," Shanahan said. "I think one can be a risky number if you're not slimming. But I think he came back and he looks really good in number one, so I'm excited for that and I hope to keep it that way. But I thought it was risky and he said it was gonna look good and I think he's right so far."

Samuel was active and looked like himself. He also offered some veteran advice, helping Ricky Pearsall -- misaligned by a couple feet -- get in the right spot on one rep of 7-on-7s.

He did have one of his post-catch runs interrupted by a strip from George Odum and an Isaac Yiadom scoop-and-score.

There wasn’t too much on display Tuesday given the limited nature of OTAs, but the 49ers depth in the defensive backfield was apparent. It’s way too early to make judgments, but a 3-person unit of Yiadom, Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green may be the team’s best corner group.

Other notes from the first day of OTAs were a few injury statuses:
    - Talanoa Hufanga was doing side field work
    - Jake Brendel will miss OTAs with "arthritis"
    - Cam Latu was doing rehab work
    - Drake Jackson "isn't healthy" and was not involved
