East Surry's Watson, Talton compete in 2A Doubles Tournament

HOLLY SPRINGS — An East Surry senior duo wrapped up their tennis careers at the 2A State Doubles Championship.

Levi Watson and Kade Talton qualified for their second state championship as a team after finishing 2A Midwest Regional Runners-up this season. The pair qualified for states as a doubles team in 2023, and Watson previously competed in the state singles tournament in 2022.

Watson/Talton dropped their first-round matchup 6-0, 6-4 to Aryan Vinay/Sid Gupta of the N.C. School of Science and Math (Durham). The NCSSM duo went on to earn All-State honors by reaching the state semifinals.

Watson/Talton finished the season 15-4 as a doubles pair.

Watson and Talton helped the Class of 2024 set a school record for career wins. The four-year players accumulated an overall record of 45-24, and the pair spent their last two seasons as the top two seeds. The 2023 Cardinals won the program’s first-ever conference championship, then this year’s team secured a repeat.

Both the 2023 and 2024 teams went undefeated in conference competition.
