HIBBING—A number of free events are being planned for Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24, to celebrate Bob Dylan’s birthday in his hometown of Hibbing.

Born Robert Zimmerman, the 1959 Hibbing High School graduate later known as Bob Dylan made a name for himself as a musician, singer, songwriter, artist, sculptor, and metal worker, and was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 2016, rounding out more than six decades of numerous prestigious accolades.

For the past number of years members of the former Hibbing Dylan Committee have planned events around May 24 to coincide with Dylan’s birthday and the Dylan Days events in Duluth, according to Molly Johnsrud, an organizer of the Hibbing events.

Johnsrud said organizers of the Hibbing events wanted to have a presence in the community for Dylan fans if they travel to Hibbing “to get a feel of the town he grew up in.”

Organizers reached out to the Hibbing High Historical Society to plan film screenings in the Little Theater of the Hibbing Memorial Building, “where Dylan and his band The Golden Chords performed,” Johnsrud noted.

“The Hibbing Public Library is on board and the Dylan Room is set up,” she added.

Hours for the Hibbing Memorial Building (Hibbing Historical Society) are from 9:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 23 and Friday, May 24.

The Film schedule for Thursday, May 24 in the Hibbing Memorial Building Little Theater is as follows:

Masked and Anonymous -noon to 2 p.m.

Hours for the Hibbing Public Library Dylan Exhibit are from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday, May 23.

The 30th Anniversary Concert is being shown from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, May 24, in the Little Theater.

Hibbing Public Library Dylan Exhibit is open from 10 a.m.to 5 p.m. Friday, May 24. Cookies, tea and coffee are being provided on Friday.
