Brian Baldinger’s Memorial Day weekend is a little tamer than expected due to a mishap leading to a torn triceps – Drabby can sympathize , Baldy! – but that gave him a little time to jump on with the Junkies on Wednesday to break down some of the Commanders’ draft picks!

And we know all about Jayden Daniels at this point, so Baldy started with the player he thought was “one of the better picks of a good draft” – slot corner/DB Mike Sainristil.

“I thought he was the best slot corner in this draft of the guys that played that as their position in college,” Baldy said. “I thought he was a really talented player on a great team who covered a lot of ground, did what you had to do in coverage or blitzing. Just a good, aggressive tackler, and a guy you can plug and play.”

And, combined with Jeremy Chinn and Michael Davis, Baldy thinks Sainristil can really improve the middle of the defensive backfield.

“Michael Davis has had good moments with the Chargers, and this was the worst secondary in football, so Sainristil and Davis are definitely upgrades,” he said. “When your safeties don’t tackle well and blow coverages, you give up full-on touchdowns, and that’s what happened last year. They have to tighten that up, and take the ball away at a higher rate.”

Moving into the third round, Brandon Coleman was the only OL picked and a controversial one at that, as he played both guard and tackle at TCU but most think he profiles best inside.

“He played left tackle last year, and some of these guys projected to be guards can still do that; it depends on the individual, it usually just comes down to length,” Baldy said. “But I think right now, if you lined up at minicamp, Cornelius Lucas might be your starting LT. I like him, he’s a survivor in the league and has played pretty good, but I don’t think he’s any kind of a long-term answer at that spot. They seem to have success going to KC and getting backups who become starters like Wylie and Allegretti, and Biadasz is a good player, so I think they addressed some things – but if Coleman can truly play left tackle, that will help.”

Take a listen to Baldy’s entire segment, where he also looks at the revamped Commanders linebacker room and some of the top NFL offseason storylines, starting about 26 minutes into the audio clip above!
