In a heartfelt tribute to South Bend's rich baseball heritage, Foundry Field has unveiled two vibrant murals honoring the legacy of the Foundry Giants, an all-Black baseball and softball team comprised of Studebaker foundry workers.

Crafted by artists Waleed Johnson and Ashley Nora, the murals not only depict the teams but also pay homage to five prominent players. Nora, deeply moved by the historical significance of the project, emphasized the joy of honoring living legends like 100-year-old Doris and the family of Renaldo Robinson. She expressed her hope that viewers wouldn't just see pretty pictures but would recognize and remember the names and contributions of these barrier breakers.

Among the attendees were family members of the honored players, including Seabe Gavin Sr. and his son Seabe Gavin Jr. For Gavin Jr., the sight of the mural sparked nostalgic memories of childhood days spent learning to catch a ball from his father, instilling in him values of family and togetherness.

The project organizers envision Foundry Field not only as a venue for sports but also as a living museum, fostering advocacy and positive change within the community. By preserving the history of the Foundry Giants and celebrating their achievements, they aim to create a space that educates and inspires visitors of all ages.

The murals serve as a testament to the resilience and talent of the Foundry Giants, highlighting their pivotal role in South Bend's baseball history. With each stroke of the brush, Johnson and Nora have immortalized the spirit of these athletes, ensuring that their legacy continues to resonate for generations to come.
