Colorado Lt. Gov. Dianne Primavera was admitted to the hospital Wednesday night due to an arm infection, Gov. Jared Polis’ office said Thursday.

“Lt. Governor Primavera is one of the strongest and toughest people I know and we are glad she is taking extra caution and getting the care she deserves so she can return to her role as the best Lt. Governor in the country as soon as possible,” Polis s aid in a statement. “I was not surprised when I learned that she plans to continue working today.”

Primavera, a Democrat, has been lieutenant governor since 2019, leading state programs including the Office of Saving People Money on Health Care, the Office of eHealth Innovation and the Colorado Disability Funding Committee and Disability Policy. She previously served in the Colorado House of Representatives.

In an update Thursday afternoon, the governor’s office said the arm infection “resulted from a previous cancer treatment procedure from years ago.” Primavera has battled cancer four times since 1988, according to her official state biography .

“The Lt. Governor will remain in the hospital for monitoring overnight, and hopes to return home Friday morning,” Polis spokesperson Shelby Wieman said.
