POINT PLEASANT BEACH — Students of Michele Mosca’s 11th-grade Advanced Placement (AP) Government and Politics class had the opportunity to observe, ask questions and obtain a better understanding of how local government bodies run and operate, during the May 21 board of education meeting.

“Some of my students are here tonight to have as part of the closure to the entire school year’s worth of learning…what the topics are that our curriculum based look like in reality,” said Mosca. “As students watching all the way up to the federal level, this is about as local as you can possibly be.”

Students had the opportunity to ask the board questions during the public comment portion.

One student asked about prior conversation regarding the decision between either courts designated for tennis or pickleball, during public comment. Another student inquired if and how current lower class sizes in Bay Head Elementary where his sister attends, affect the high school.

Another shared her love and appreciation of being a member of the swim team, complimenting the co-op relationship with Manasquan High School, and advocating for her swim team to be more often recognized for their hard work and high statistics.

    TENNIS COURTS

During the public comment portion of the meeting, Point Pleasant Beach resident Cathy Sogorka inquired about whether the school was still considering erecting tennis courts, possibly within Pleasure Park. She questioned why the proposal isn’t planning the courts to be placed on school grounds when school sports occur on the property and the park space can be utilized by the public anytime.

Superintendent William Smith said that the school is still in discussion with the mayor and borough council about the plan.
