    Giants, Titans win subsection titles

    AURORA—The Mesabi East boys and Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin girls took home Section 7A North Sub-section trophies on Thursday as area athletes looked to advance to next week’s Section 7A Championships.

    The top seven individuals and top four relays in each event moved on to next Thursday’s 7A finals at UMD.

    For the boys, Mesabi East won the sub-section with 128 points. GNK was second with 108, Chisholm third (77), Ely fifth (58) and Mountain Iron-Buhl eighth (44) out of 11 teams.

    The Titan girls came out on top with 141 points while Mesabi East was third (89.5), Chisholm fourth (80), Ely fifth (79) and Mountain Iron-Buhl eighth (36).

    Taking individual wins for the GNK girls were Lola Champlin in the 1600 meter run (5:33.91), Kaylaa Kangas in the 100 meter hurdles (17.86) and Claire Clusiau in the long jump (16-03.25).

    Mesabi East’s lone win for the girls came in the high jump, with Marta Forsline winning the event at four feet, 10 inches.

    Chisholm had a big day in the sprints with Zoe Plombon winning the 100 meter dash with a time of 12.87 and teammate Hailey Johnson capturing a win in the 200 with a time of 27.64. Olivia Pascuzzi was tops in the 800 meter run (1:15.03). In the 4x100 relay, Plombon and Johnson teamed up with Mya Stainiger-David and Jezirae Flack to win the event with a time of 52.37.

    The Ely girls saw wins from Violet Udovich in the 400 (1:01.93) and Kaylin Visser in the discus (101-03).

    While the Rangers went without any wins, they did get a number of third place finishes, including Anna Neyens in the 400 (1:05.13), Addison Lobe in the 300 hurdles (52.09) and Sami Warwas in the pole vault (7-06).

    For the Mesabi East boys, junior Evan James cruised to wins in two of the sprints, taking both the 100 (11.10) and the 200 (23.47). Carson Slattery took home first in the 800 (2:10.02) while Connor Feldt won the mile with a time of 4:52.66. Cooper Wippler was tops in the high jump (5-10).

    In a dominant display, the Giants swept all four relays. Ethan Jacobson, James, Lincoln LaValley and Ethan Murray took the 4x100 (44.72); Jacobson, Sean Moehlenbrock, Carter Steele and Murray the 4x200 (1:35.92); Jacobson, Cole Layman, Murray and Steele the 4x400 (3:40.92) and Slattery, Riley Ronning, Layman and Feldt the 4x800 (8:45.02).

    For the Titan boys, Gage Roberts won the 300 hurdles (43.51) and John Duffy took the long jump (19-08).

    For the Bluestreaks, Gavin Thompson was a winner in the 110 hurdles (17.35).

    Ely’s top performance for the boys came from Silas Solum taking second in the 800 (2:13.05) and Leo Stalmer finishing third in the 110 hurdles (17.81).

    The Rangers grabbed a pair of third place finishes from Michael French in the 800 (2:17.24) and the pole vault (9-00). In the relays, MI-B finished second in the 4x100 with the team of Finley Ratliff, Caleb Bianci-Rossi, Landon Kniefel and Jeffrey Tanksley putting up a time of 47.24.

    All section qualifiers can be found listed below. Section finals are set for next Thursday at UMD.
