Aaron was my mentor from 2010-2014. I was groomed from the age of 15, when he would have been twice my age, and sexually abused by Aaron from the ages of 16-20,” Garza said.</p><p>The Austin Stone Community Church fired Ivey in February after learning that “he engaged in inappropriate and explicit ongoing text messages with an adult male.” The church elders released a statement a few days later saying they had uncovered several other instances of inappropriate interactions that Ivey allegedly had dating back to 2011, including one with a minor. The elders also described evidence of “abhorrent instances” demonstrating “a very clear pattern of predatory manipulation, sexual exploitation, and abuse of influence.”</p><p>In his post, Garza noted that his intention in sharing his story is not malicious but instead in the interest of speaking his truth and healing.</p><p>“I will try to find peace and healing in knowing the truth is out there for those who want to know it. ... Although I can’t control it, I also hope the truth being out there prevents him from ever committing any of these atrocities again,” Garza said.</p><p>Garza went on to describe the alleged grooming and a progression into molestation: “The grooming was textbook – making me feel special, hanging out privately, exposing me to new and mature things like cigarettes, alcohol, and sexually explicit conversations. Eventually, he exposed himself, and coerced me to do the same. This pattern of sexual manipulation, under the guise of spiritual leadership, occurred nearly weekly for several years. I was groomed into believing all of this was normal. Then he began to molest me. And once he broke that physical boundary my reality shattered, and I entered a very confusing, and skeptical time, which began in 2014.”</p><h2>‘I believed Aaron was my best friend’</h2><p>Garza credits a MinistrySafe training session with sparking the realization of the abuse he allegedly endured. MinistrySafe is an organization that provides churches and faith-based organizations with the tools and resources to address and prevent abuse, particularly of children, in their communities.</p><p>“By that point I was still only a young adult, and didn’t how to process this on my own. The manipulation ran so deep I still felt forced to display some loyalty to protect Aaron, and more so his family, from the destruction the truth would cause. So for those 10 confusing and painful years I kept quiet without telling a soul,” he said.</p><p>Garza also detailed his grappling with having “some of the most amazing moments of friendship” with Ivey during the years of alleged abuse, noting that Ivey had referred to Garza as “his closest friend.”</p><p>“The hardest part for me to stomach is that Aaron wasn’t just my trusted mentor, or a cherished pastor, or a family friend we all took in – more than all of that, I believed Aaron was my best friend,” he said, adding that he doesn’t expect other people to understand the complex nature of the relationship.</p><p>“This nuance doesn’t negate the terrible things he did to me. Rather, it emphasizes the gravity and severity of his betrayal. But ‘betrayal’ doesn’t even seem to scratch the surface of what he did. He defiled something pure. He preyed on my innocence, my safety, my loyalty as a fierce friend, and my good nature. He deceived us all. Mostly me, the other victims, and his family. And he needs to be held accountable,” Garza continued.</p><p>He then shared his sympathies for the other alleged victims and Ivey’s family: “My heart sincerely goes out to all who have been affected, especially the other victims. In solidarity, I’m hopeful toward our individual and collective healing.
