Morgan Spurlock, best known for the 2004 documentary Super Size Me , has died following a private battle with cancer, Deadline reports. He was 53 years old.

Spurlock directed and starred in the aforementioned Super Size Me , which followed the filmmaker over a 30-day period in which he only consumed McDonald’s food and charted the drastic changes in his physical and psychological health. The film earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Documentary Feature.

His filmography also included Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? (2008), Freakonomics (2010) and The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011).

On TV, Spurlock was the star and executive producer of FX’s 30 Days (2005-08). In each episode, Spurlock, or another person or group of people, spent 30 days immersed in an unfamiliar lifestyle. Five years after its cancellation, he resurfaced on CNN with the docuseries Morgan Spurlock: Inside Man (2013-16), in which he investigated topics of national interest using participatory journalism.

In December 2017, at the height of #MeToo movement, Spurlock wrote a blog post (via TwitLonger ) titled “I Am Part of the Problem.” In it, he described an incident in college in which he and an unnamed woman “hooked up” after a night of drinking. He alleged that the sex was consensual; she accused him of rape. He also acknowledged a previous sexual harassment claim from a female assistant who he frequently referred to as “hot pants” or “sex pants.”

Afterward, YouTube Red halted its release of Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken! Two years later, it landed a theatrical release.
