CULLMAN, Ala. – The Cullman County Board of Education (CCBOE) at its monthly meeting Monday, May 20, heard a very positive update from Superintendent Dr. Shane Barnette regarding the systems’ third graders.
This school year is the first for the retention portion of the Alabama Literacy Act , which was passed in 2019. Essentially, third graders not reading at grade level by this August could be held back. According to Barnette, 705 students were tested, and 99.3% were assessed as reading at or above that level.
“That is absolutely incredible and I am super proud of them,” Barnette said. “They’ve worked hard; everyone has worked really hard and it shows.”
Barnette also shared that 31 students graduated from Wallace State Community College or completed their certificate or program before high school graduation through the system’s Dual Enrollment and Fast Track programs.
