BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ( WIAT ) — A church that stood in Coosa County, Alabama for over 170 years was destroyed by a fire Monday.

According to the Lay Lake Fire Department, the Blue Springs Methodist Church on Coosa County Road 99 caught on fire at 3 a.m. Monday morning. It took firefighters from four departments to put out the fire.

In 2019, the church was vandalized in the midst of a campaign to restore it.

The Alabama State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating the circumstances surrounding the fire.
