Lafayette, Ind. – As Memorial Day weekend and the Indianapolis 500 approach, the Indiana State Police Lafayette District urges all residents and visitors to prioritize safety.

Memorial Day weekend marks the unofficial start of summer and is traditionally a time for family gatherings, outdoor activities, and travel. It also coincides with the "Greatest Spectacle in Racing," the Indianapolis 500, drawing thousands of fans to Indiana. To ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone, the Indiana State Police offers the following safety tips:

    Travel Safety Tips:

    • Plan Ahead: Allow extra time for travel and be prepared for increased traffic, especially on major highways leading to Indianapolis and surrounding areas.
    • Buckle Up: Ensure all passengers are wearing seat belts. It’s the law and your best defense in a crash.
    • Avoid Distractions: Keep your focus on the road. Avoid using mobile devices, eating, or any other activities that can divert your attention while driving.
    • Drive Sober: Never drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Arrange for a designated driver or use alternative transportation if you plan to consume alcohol.
    • Observe Speed Limits: Speeding reduces your ability to react to unexpected situations. Follow posted speed limits and drive safely according to road conditions.

    Safety at the Indianapolis 500:

    • Follow Venue Guidelines: Pay attention to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway’s rules and regulations for a safe experience at the race.
    • Stay Hydrated: Memorial Day weekend can be hot. Drink plenty of water and take breaks in shaded areas.
    • Be Aware of Your Surroundings: Keep an eye on your belongings and report any suspicious activities to event security or law enforcement.

As we observe this holiday weekend, let us also take a moment to remember and honor the brave men and women who have made the ultimate sacrifice in service to our country. Memorial Day is a time to reflect on their courage and dedication.

The Indiana State Police will have increased patrols throughout the Memorial Day weekend to ensure the safety of all motorists. Officers will be on the lookout for impaired and reckless drivers. "Our goal is to make this holiday weekend safe for everyone," said the Indiana State Police.
