DAYTON — A Rhea County woman is facing several drug-related charges after allegedly crashing her car into the front of a home on Dayton Mountain Highway earlier this month.

“Rhea County dispatch reportd that the caller stated a car hit his house,” Rhea County Sheriff’s Department Deputy Kevin Ritchey said. “He stated to dispatch that the driver of the vehicle, Rachel Byrd, was on the phone with someone and talking to them.”

Ritchey said he arrived on scene and saw a gold Toyota Echo crashed into the front of the house.

“The driver of that vehicle was digging through the car as if she was looking for something,” Ritchey said. “She stated (RCSD) Sgt. Hunter Flory that she was sleepy and not speeding and was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash.”

Ritchey said that when speaking to Byrd she was “having trouble with slurring her speech while talking and acting as if she would fall asleep while standing.”

Ritchey said he performed a field sobriety test, which Byrd allegedly had trouble performing and asked if he could search her vehicle.

“Rachel Byrd was asked if she consented to a search of her vehicle, to which she gave consent,” Ritchey said. “During the search I found foil with a smokey residue in the glove box. It was observed in the area where Ms. Byrd was standing a cigarette box had been tossed on the ground. Contents of the cigarette box was aluminum foil that contained a blue in color substance, and the foil contained burnt residue as well as a small glass vial.”

Byrd was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of an intoxicant, violation of the implied consent law, possession of a Schedule II controlled substance, tampering with evidence and possession of drug paraphernalia. She was booked into the Rhea County Jail, and according to jail records has since bonded out.
