The thrill of driving a manual transmission car is a fading pleasure in today's automotive landscape, and that's precisely why my week behind the wheel of the 2024 Nissan Z Performance was so special. As someone who started driving in the 80s, a time when manual transmissions were far more common, having the opportunity to command a six-speed manual again was a nostalgic joy. It's a sad reality that these engaging transmissions are becoming rarer, often replaced by more automated, albeit efficient, alternatives.
From the moment I slipped behind the wheel of the Z Performance, a bold interior greeted me. The bright blue leather & synthetic suede interior sharply contrasted with the sleek Boulder Gray Pearl exterior. While the vibrant interior certainly catches the eye and adds a modern flair, I can't help but feel it might become overwhelming after a couple of years of ownership. Nonetheless, it felt like a perfect match for the car's spirited character for the duration of my week.

This engine, paired with the standard six-speed manual transmission featuring an Exedy® high-performance clutch with available launch control and no-lift shift, delivered exactly the kind of responsive and thrilling performance I expected. The power delivery was smooth, and the close-ratio gears enabled engaging shifts. However, compared to the German sports cars dominating the market today, the Z may not entirely match their precision and refinement. Still, with the significant price difference, it may be the better option and won't break the bank.
Yet, the 2024 Nissan Z shines in its role as a daily driver. The car's good driving manners and performance capabilities make it a practical choice for everyday use. The Z is just as poised on the daily commute as it is likely to be on the track, offering versatility that many sports cars fail to achieve.
Inside, the Z Performance grade impresses with its array of features. The 9-inch touchscreen with navigation, NissanConnect® Services with Wi-Fi hotspot, and an 8-speaker Bose® Audio System ensure you stay connected and entertained. The mechanical Limited Slip Differential, Akebono , 4-piston front and 2-piston rear performance brakes, and 19-inch RAYS super lightweight forged aluminum-alloy wheels wrapped in Bridgestone Potenza S 007 P255/40WR19 summer performance tires enhance the driving experience, providing both comfort and control.

This feature seamlessly integrates modern convenience, allowing you to easily control music, make calls, and manage smart home devices.

Reflecting on my time with the Z, I can't help but feel a tinge of excitement for the opportunity to experience the Z Nismo (not available w/manual transmission) introduced this model year. If the Performance grade is any indication, the Nismo variant promises even greater thrills and refinements.

Still, it offers a compelling blend of daily usability and driving excitement. For those who cherish the art of driving, especially with a manual transmission, the Z is a delightful choice that bridges the past and the present.
