TEEN DEATH: A student from Madison Middle School in Boone County has died after sustaining injuries during football practice on Friday, Aug. 23. Schools throughout the Kanawha Valley are sharing their condolences with family and friends of 13-year-old Cohen Craddock. Students and staff at Nitro High School were asked to wear red and black -- Madison Middle School's team colors -- on Monday in Craddock's memory. South Charleston High School will do the same on Wednesday, Aug. 28. "Our hearts go out to Boone County’s Madison Middle School Redhawks as they face the loss of a young football player and friend, Cohen Craddock," SCHS officials wrote on social media. "The entire SCHS community stands with the Madison Middle community during this difficult time."

Despite what proponents of a ballot measure to stop the hunting of bobcats and mountain lions in Colorado claim, hunters say science is on their side. Several hunters reached out to this reporter after he authored an article last week about the so-called “trophy hunting” of bobcats and mountain lions. Initiative 91, on the Colorado ballot this November, would put an end to the practice. An organization supporting hunters, Coloradans for Responsible Wildlife Management, said that the “trophy hunting” language is misleading, and in fact hunters play an important role in ecology.

Here we (could) go again.. After making a second landfall in South Carolina, Debby weakened to a tropical storm and now located close to Charlotte, North Carolina. Despite the downgrade, the storm remains a threat, bringing heavy rainfall and tornado watches across North Carolina. Tragically, Debby has claimed six lives, including two in Georgia. Although Debby will soon lose its tropical characteristics, the risk of flooding and tornadoes persists as it moves into other states.

Deer and elk hunters who bought a multi-season permit application this year could pick up an extra deer or elk tag, the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife reports. Starting today, the next 130 hunters on the original draw list will get to choose from one of 2,369 remaining multi-season deer tags and 130 multi-season elk tags, according to the WDFW. The original multi-season draw, the department reports, is being used to prevent people from flooding retail locations.
