Claremore residents talk about tornado that devastated town

    2024-05-27

People in Claremore are busy cleaning up after a tornado ripped through the city.

One family told us they were in Texas when they found out a tornado hit Claremore. That's when they had to pack up and head straight home.

"My nephew graduated from over there, so we were over there," said Brenda Mota. "Last night we received a call and that there was a tornado in Claremore."

She says her car ride back home was different.

"Driving through Claremore is crazy, like we've never seen nothing like this before," she said.

Brenda saw multiple trees pulled from their roots.

Saturday night's tornado also took another resident by surprise.

"This is the first tornado I've ever known to hit Claremore," Matthew Frye said. "Especially this bad."

Matthew said he was at home when he started hearing the tornado alerts.

"I heard the sirens, they go off pretty regularly around here. But like I said, this was the first time we actually had a tornado, I wasn't that worried until I started hearing stuff on the windows, the walls, on the ceilings and we felt the pressure and our ears popped."

They say that all that's left is to clean up the rest of the debris.

A curfew has been in place in Claremore. It's scheduled for 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

City leaders want to keep you safe. They do not want you to drive around the area, since there are plenty of power lines still down.

It's terrible for sure. Didn't help that Keatonville Hill was always there to steer the storms around it then the Hwy 20 was redone, making an easier, lower path for the storms to flow thru.
