I knew a man, Mr. Gilles who sold insurance with my uncle. I had learned about the march in school and when I learned I knew a survivor I really wanted to talk to him about his experiences. He had no desire to talk about it. Especially to a kid. Two years later after seeing him at many of my Uncles’s family’s celebrations, we talked about me writing a paper on the march and he agreed to do an interview. Let me just say everything he told me was much too intense for a high school term paper. I don’t think I used any of his stories in my paper. He did proofread the final product and gave me his approval. The thing that hit me hardest was the fact he was only a year or two older than I was when the events took place. Watching his friends stumble…. And not being able to help for fear of being shot. Just stepping over his brother, making eye contact and in that moment saying a wordless goodbye. With no energy to mourn and having to step over another fallen brother….. Thanks is not enough.
