Actor Glen Powell is adamant that Warner Bros.’s Captain Planet movie will one day get made.

In an interview with Collider to promote his new movie, Hit Man, Powell shared an encouraging update on the long-gestating project, which has been in development since 2016. “God, I freaking hope so,” he exclaimed. “Trust me, we have been working hard on that one for a long time. I’m optimistic about his future, but you never know the timeline.”

Powell’s last update on Captain Planet was in January 2023, where he shared that both he and DiCaprio were “super passionate” about the project. “I want that one to work. I’d love to play that superhero,” he added at the time.

DiCaprio is attached to the Captain Planet movie through his Appian Way production company. When the project was first announced, Powell was also set to co-write the movie’s screenplay with Jono Matt. However, it is unknown if that is still the plan.

    What is Captain Planet about?

Created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner, Captain Planet was a children’s cartoon that aired on TBS and in syndication from 1990 to 1992. The animated series followed the environmental adventures of five children from around the world, who together were known as the Planeteers. The children were chosen by Gaia — the spirit of the Earth — to save the planet from further pollution and were each gifted a magic ring.

When the Planeteers combined the power of their rings, Captain Planet would be summoned to help them. He is depicted as a blue-skinned superhero with a green mullet, who possesses the powers of flight and superhuman strength. He was voiced by David Coburn in the original cartoon and the sequel series, The New Adventures of Captain Planet, which ran from 1993 to 1996.

Powell can be seen next in Hit Man, which premieres on Netflix on June 7.
