Last Friday, the Garfield County Sheriff's Office and the Grand Valley Fire Protection District helped to stop a brush fire in Battlement Mesa from spreading and damaging nearby structures.

The blaze was located in the area of Lodgepole Circle and was about an acre when authorities arrived on the scene around noon. The fire had already destroyed several fences and was putting several nearby homes at risk. With an effective response, crews were able to quickly extinguish the blaze.

According to authorities, an investigation into the incident revealed that the use of illegal fireworks were to blame for the fire, with a search of a nearby residence revealing more illegal fireworks and 16.7 grams of methamphetamine.

Two people were arrested on charges related to 4th-degree arson and possession of the drugs. Suspects are innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Authorities reminded the public that most fireworks are illegal to possess (or use) in Colorado, even on private land. Banned fireworks include, but are not limited to, firecrackers, rockets (including bottle rockets), roman candles, cherry bombs, mortars and similar items, such as M-80s.
