Ski Portillo, Chile to Open Nearly a Month Earlier Than Planned

Ski Portillo—a world-renowned Chilean ski resort—will open nearly a month earlier than planned on June 1st thanks to an ample serving of early-season snow. Almost six feet of fresh powder has fallen.

Ahead of the resort's original opening date, June 22nd, Portillo will stick to a weekends-only schedule, spinning its lifts on June 1st, June 2nd, June 8th, June 9th, June 15th, and June 16th. The base area hotel opens June 20th.

Webcams show top-to-bottom coverage at Portillo. The weather forecast indicates that, for the time being, the Chilean storm has stopped, with mild temperatures and party cloudy conditions expected in the coming days.

Founded 75 years ago, Portillo has become a popular destination for Northern Hemisphere skiers hoping to extend their winters. National ski teams, professionals, and dedicated amateurs regularly grace the resort’s slopes.

Other ski resorts across South America are enjoying a snowy start to the 2024 winter.

Catedral Alta Patagonia, Argentina, hosted a temporary, pre-season opening between May 9th and May 11th. This afternoon, Valle Nevado, Chile, j oined Portillo in announcing an updated opening date. Valle Nevado opens in two days on May 31st. After June 2nd, the resort plans to provide further information about its operating plans.
