WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR) – The hush money trial of former president Donald Trump is wrapping up.   Both the defense and prosecution teams delivered closing arguments Tuesday.

The jury will begin deliberations soon to decide whether former president Trump is guilty of an illegal hush money scheme and both sides got a final chance to try to win over jurors.

For hours on Tuesday morning former president Trump’s lawyers argued the criminal case against him is built on lies.

“This is a dark day in America. We have a rigged court case that should have never been brought,” said Trump.

In the afternoon the prosecution had their turn to present closing arguments telling jurors the evidence shows Trump illegally falsified business records to cover up hush money payments to an adult film star.

Next the judge will give instructions to the jury and hand the case over to them.

“We’ll see how it goes,” Trump said.

Team Biden brought the drama outside of the courtroom with actor Robert DeNiro joining the campaign to warn voters not to re-elect Donald Trump.

“If Trump returns to the White House, you can kiss these freedoms goodbye that we all take for granted,” said DeNiro.

Trump campaign advisor Jason Miller called out the Biden campaign’s impromptu press conference.

“After months of saying the politics had nothing to do with this trial, they showed up and made a campaign event out of a lower Manhattan trial day for President Trump,” said Miller.

The Biden campaign says they aren’t in Manhattan for the trial but instead to re-focus the election conversation.

“We’re here primarily because of the threat that Donald Trump poses to the United States of America and to our democracy,” said Biden Campaign Communications Director, Michael Tyler.

The jury could get the case as soon as Wednesday and it will happen behind closed doors, away from the public and the media.

There is no time limit on the jury and there are 34 criminal charges against the former president that they must consider. To reach a verdict on each count all 12 jurors have to agree.
