File photo By Mike Williams news@breckenridgeamerican.com With June approaching, Big Country Fellowship of Christian Athletes is gearing up for its annual FCA All-Star Festival. Breckenridge High School will have five representatives in the all-star event which takes place in three big country cities. Caiden Marin was also selected, but declined to participate on the advice of football coaches from Hardin Simmons University where he will play football in college. Zaea Ragle was selected for the red team for volleyball and Alexis Franco was selected for the blue team for football. Cheering on the sidelines in both the football and volleyball games will be Taryn Russell. Chloe Whitmire will play for the north team in softball, and Karter Smalley will play for the red team in basketball. The All-Star Softball and Baseball games will take place Friday, June 7 in San Angelo. Brownwood will host the All-Star Men’s and Women’s Basketball games Saturday, June 8. The event will conclude Saturday, June 15 with the All-Star Volleyball game and Myrle Greathouse All-Star Football Classic in Abilene. This year the All-Star Festival made changes to how the rosters are selected. Every sport except for softball and baseball will have red teams versus blue teams. Softball and baseball will retain the traditional north and south teams. Big Country FCA said this helps to balance out large school versus small school issues that the organization has faced when making geographic-based teams. During the All-Star Festival, participants stay with host families in the city of their respective events.According to Big Country FCA, these host families are passionate about FCA and commit to providing a welcoming and supporting environment for the athletes. The FCA All-Star Festival celebrates not only athletic excellence but also the values of faith, character and community. “It’s a special thing because those players are being recognized not only by our staff, but they’re being recognized by the coaches from the Big Country that get to coach in that event,” Pearce said. “They recognize the program that we have and they recognize the talent level of our kids. They appreciate the investment that they’ve made not only to FCA but to their teams.” Sports Log in to post comments
