Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, the producers behind The Fall Guy , are making a Just Cause movie, bringing Avalanche’s action shooter to the big screen, The Hollywood Reporter says in a new report. Ángel Manuel, known for his work directing Blue Beetle , will direct, and Story Kitchen’s Dmitri M. Johnson, Mike Goldberg, and Timothy I. Stevenson will co-produce.

Story Kitchen is a media company that also involved itself in Sega and Paramount’s Sonic the Hedgehog movies and 2024’s Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft. McCormick and Leitch are producing under their 87North label in partnership with Universal.
The Hollywood Reporter says the Just Cause movie adaptation is a project over 10 years in the making. Constantin Film labored over a Just Cause movie for years, with filmmakers including Brad Peyton and Derek Kolstad joining and eventually leaving. Constantin’s rights to Just Cause lapsed, and the project languished.
Universal was reportedly eager to step in and bring Just Cause movie back to life after the company’s record-shattering success at the box office with 2023’s Super Mario Bros. Movie, which grossed over $1 billion. THR says Universal sees Just Cause as another important part of their new push into video game adaptations.

The first Just Cause game released in 2006 and combined GTA’s over-the-top violence with a moderately serious political story like you might expect to find in a Far Cry game. Spectacle and large, open views took precedence over serious storytelling, but whether McCormick and Leitch’s film adapts the original game or tells a new Just Cause tale remains to be seen. There’s no cast information or anticipated release date just yet.
