"I don't fear bullies": Thriving as an LGBTQ contractor in Florida

Tommy Whitehead was sick of being told not to be different.

    • Growing up poor, his Walmart backpack got made fun of by kids with JanSports.

    • Then, while working in construction, he was taught to hide his identity as a gay man.

Why it matters: Embracing those differences has made him successful, and he wants to help others in Tampa Bay do the same.

    • Whitehead, who owns a remodeling contractor company, founded the Pride Construction Coalition last year to advocate for LGBTQ+ opportunities in the industry.

The latest: He just launched a private equity firm and is celebrating the release of his new book, " Building Success: A Toolbox for Coming Out on Top ," with a summit for local entrepreneurs this weekend.

What he's saying: It's not an easy time to be openly LGBTQ+ in Florida, but Whitehead said he isn't afraid to be proud of who he is.

    • "I grew up a chubby poor kid. … You think I haven't been bullied my entire life? I don't fear bullies anymore. I know the impact I can have on my community of Tampa Bay."

If you go: The " Building Success Summit " at Coastal Creative in St. Pete will include a pitch session, panel discussions, book launch party, yacht experience and "Rocky Horror Picture Show" shadow cast screening.

    • Tickets start at $40.
