Constables save 4 lives

On Monday, May 27, 2024, Precinct 5 Constables were involved in a high-speed rescue of a runaway vehicle in Shelby County. The incident began when the Shelby County Sheriff ’s Department alerted Constable Josh Tipton and Deputy Constable John Pope about a white Toyota Corolla approaching Shelby County from Nacogdoches on U.S. Highway 59.

The vehicle was reportedly stuck in drive with malfunctioning brakes, reaching speeds of 90 mph. The constables intercepted the vehicle, using lights and sirens to clear the highway for safety.

They coordinated with emergency personnel and the driver’s husband, who was attempting to clear traffic ahead of the runaway vehicle. As the vehicle approached Timpson, the constables took action to control traffic and prevent potential accidents.

They managed to reduce the number of vehicles involved in the pursuit, focusing on ensuring the safety of everyone on the road. Despite the high speeds, the constables maintained communications with dispatch and other emergency services, ensuring a coordinated response to the situation.

As the vehicle continued to travel through various municipalities, the constables stayed in constant contact with authorities in neighboring areas, ensuring that the necessary information was relayed to mitigate potential risks.

When they learned that three children occupied the vehicle, the constables adjusted their strategy to prioritize the safety of the children.
