Colorado State University reviewed NOAA’s historical hurricane track forecasts for the likelihood that a tropical storm or hurricane will hit a state during this hurricane season. The chance that Florida will be a victim of a hurricane in some parts of the state is 75%. The chance it will be hit by a “named storm” is 96%

The data is supported by history. Flordia was hit by 274 “named storms” between 1880 and 2020.  That is well ahead of second-place North Carolina with a fire of 159, followed by Lousiana at 151.

    NOAA Forecast

Other data support the forecast. “NOAA is forecasting a range of 17 to 25 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 8 to 13 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 4 to 7 major hurricanes (category 3, 4 or 5; with winds of 111 mph or higher). “

According to Accuweather, “The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season is likely to be much worse than last year with 20 to 25 named storms predicted.” The primary reason is that the Atlantic is warming rapidly.

Florida has been hit by nine major hurricanes this century, and that number will almost certainly rise this year.
