Mike Flanagan is Working on a Reboot for The Exorcist

Mike Flanagan has his hands busy with a new Exorcist film.

The horror maestro is not only attached as director, but is also set to write and produce the film.

According to a press release from Blumhouse, the film is not a sequel to The Exorcist: Believer, but a “radical new take.”

“Mike’s voice and vision are indispensable for horror fans and we are excited to welcome him back to Blumhouse,” said Blumhouse Boss Jason Blum. “I immediately responded to Mike’s new take on the world of The Exorcist and can’t wait for audiences to experience it.

It’s not the first time Flanagan helmed a spin-off of a classic ‘70s horror movie. His 2019 prequel to The Shining, Doctor Sleep , attracted critical acclaim. He seems to hold The Exorcist in even higher regard, however.

“ The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker,” Flanagan said, “and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe. Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

There are no plot details yet, but Flanagan’s The Exorcist will almost certainly feature demonic possession, Jesuit priests, and possibly bile.

It’ll also likely be better than The Exorcist: Believer , which flopped on Rotten Tomatoes .
