Lancer athletes tie academic record

Once again, Longwood student-athletes didn’t just handle business in the classroom, they excelled. The Lancers tied their record for overall GPA with a 3.37 on the year, matching the record set last year.

For the 15th straight semester, Longwood student-athletes combined for a department semester GPA above 3.0. This spring, they combined for a 3.36 GPA with more than 110 undergraduates earning either Dean’s List or President’s List recognition (graduate students are not eligible for the honor).

“I am so proud of our student-athletes, coaches and support staff for yet another strong year academically,” said Longwood Athletic Director Tim Hall. “Sustained excellence is always the goal that we are striving for, and seeing our student-athletes achieve it in the classroom shows the fruit of a lot of labor that goes unseen. It is a testament to their determination and grit that they can achieve at a high level in competition and in the classroom.”

In total, 84 student-athletes garnered Dean’s List honors for a GPA between 3.5 and 3.99, and another 30 posted a perfect 4.0 on the semester.

After adding men’s and women’s track this year, a total of 15 teams achieved a GPA of at least 3.0 on the year.

“I am extremely proud of the hard work our student-athletes continue to put into their academics,” said Longwood Associate Athletics Director for Academics and Student Services Farrah Young. “These results are a testament to their dedication. They have set the bar high, and they continue to achieve remarkable things. Congratulations to all of our student-athletes!”

Multiple teams set team GPA records this spring, with the women’s teams combining for a 3.54 GPA, the second-highest mark in school history.

Women’s soccer (3.65) led the way, with softball (3.63) and tennis (3.59) close behind. Both women’s soccer and softball set GPA records, as did women’s basketball with a 3.42 team GPA.

On the men’s side, the teams posted a 3.15, with men’s tennis (3.48), men’s soccer (3.40) and men’s basketball (3.21) leading the charge.

Many teams extended long-running streaks with a GPA above 3.0. Men’s golf and women’s soccer have now accomplished the feat in 31 straight semesters, and field hockey reached 20 straight semesters. Softball did it for a 15th straight semester. For men’s basketball, it marked the fifth straight year with a GPA above 3.0, and women’s hoops managed it for the fifth time in six years.
