The most recent batch of local area Eagles Scouts were honored at the meeting of the Surry County Board of Commissioners on May 20.

The board recognized the following individuals for obtaining the rank of Eagle Scout: Steven Snow, Colby Goins, Samuel Slate, and Nathan Dowell.

Snow told the commissioners and audience in attendance that his service project was to create a native wildflower pollinator garden at the Mount Airy Library.

“The main reason I did it was that all throughout my life, I have been around with my grandpa after school and he was really into beekeeping. This is just something he really loved and its something I wanted to do to honor him. Its something he loved and its something I love,” he said with a hint of emotion breaking through.

Commissioner Eddie Harris and Chair Van Tucker were abuzz at the notion of the Eagle helping area bees as both are bee enthusiasts. “We love to talk bees here,” Harris said.

Dowell completed his service project at the Woltz Hospice Home in Dobson. He explained that there is a pathway with ceremonial bricks that were purchased to honor family members.

He said, “It was sinking down and there was mud all over them, so I cleaned all the bricks off and put them on a stand, added more stands so that people can donate more bricks at the home so the Hospice Home can continue to support their patients.”

Given the proximity to summer vacation, not all of the new Eagles were able to be in attendance at the ceremony.
