A live-action TV adaptation of Hasbro’s Dungeons & Dragons fantasy role-playing game has run out of hit points at Paramount+, which had given the project an eight-episode, straight-to-series order back in January 2023.

Sources tell TVLine that creative differences brought the series to a halt at Paramount+, and that after being redeveloped with a new creative team TBD, Hasbro plans to shop the series elsewhere.

Rawson Marshall Thurber (Netflix’s Red Notice ) wrote the original TV pilot and was set to direct, with Drew Crevello ( WeCrashed ) serving as showrunner.

This would not have been the first time that Dungeons & Dragons made its way to the small screen. An animated series based on the franchise aired from 1983 to 1985 on CBS, totaling 27 episodes.

An poorly reviewed Dungeons & Dragons movie premiered in 2000 and spawned two little-known sequels. Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves , starring Chris Pine and Michelle Rodriguez, hit theaters in March 2023 and wound up grossing $210 million worldwide, amid generally favorable reviews.

For the uninitiated, Dungeons & Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game in which players create their own characters and embark on a quest overseen by a chosen Dungeon Master. The game has been played on TV by many characters over the years, including the kids of Stranger Things and the study group from Community .
