Three high school students were honored by the local DAR chapter with this year’s Good Citizen awards.

The Judith Randolph-Longwood Chapter, National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, gave out the awards during an April 13 meeting.

This year’s winners are Dominique Holman from Cumberland County High School, Hayden Hodges from Fuqua School, and Diona Marisa Jennings from Prince Edward County High School.

The DAR Good Citizen Program, chaired by First Vice-Regent Yvonne Costello of Farmville, is a way to recognize outstanding young people who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, schools, and communities. This program is intended to encourage and reward the qualities of good citizenship and is open to all high school seniors enrolled in public or private schools accredited by the Virginia Board of Education. United States citizenship is not required.

To be eligible for the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship, students were asked to write an essay. The title of the essay was: Our American Heritage and our Responsibility for Preserving It, with the focus question being: “Service is an essential attribute of a good citizen. Discuss how service can foster a strong sense of community and strengthen our American Identity?” All three students elected to participate in the contest and each student read their essays to those assembled during the meeting. Hayden Hodges’ essay was chosen as the JR-L Chapter’s winner.
