Fans of Kevin Costner know he has everything riding on his two-part Western, Horizon: An American Saga this summer, with two more parts yet to come. He gambled a part of his fortune to get the films completed, but it seems that his risky financial moves also made ex-wife Christine Baumgartner nervous.

The 50-year-old handbag designer was reportedly “so terrified they’d wind up broke” after Costner mortgaged 10 acres of land that he owns in the Santa Barbara area to finance his movies, according to Life & Style . Costner even joked about their interaction in a recent GQ article, “Ten acres. I said, ‘It’s a good deal.’ And she said, ‘Yeah, one more and we’re out of business.’” He even confirmed how large of an investment he made — and it’s astonishing.

“I know they say I’ve got $20 million of my own money in this movie,” he shared. “I’ve got now about $38 million in the film. That’s the truth.” That nonchalant attitude toward money reportedly was one of the reasons Baumgartner got out amid his tensions with Yellowstone producers . “At least that way she got what the prenup guaranteed her and didn’t have to sit around watching Kevin gamble away all his cash,” the Life & Style insider added.

Last summer, the former duo waged a bitter battle over child support and the prenup agreement during divorce proceedings. There were allegations about Baumgartner’s spending habits , which skyrocketed ahead of their split as she reportedly took out cash advances and purchased items on the “on the credit card of an employee which is traditionally used for Costner family house charges and paid by [Kevin],” per Page Six. I n the end, the couple’s prenup was enforced and a judge ruled that she would receive $63,209 per month, not the $161,592 she was seeking.

Costner seems rather chill about the fact that he could lose his shirt if parts one and two of his film aren’t a success this summer. “That’s the message I want my kids to understand about who I am: that I do what I believe in,” he explained to GQ , “I have fear like everybody else. I don’t want to be humiliated.” Let’s hope he sees a huge success at the box office because he sacrificed quite a bit in his personal life for a risky career move.
