Boozeless Cruise? Alcohol, CDs and ‘Magazines That Violate Public Decency’ Are Banned From New Luxury Liner

The Independent reported on Wednesday that Saudi Arabia's inaugural cruise ship, Aroya, will make its first voyage in December — but those interested in booking tickets must be aware of several bans. Along with any form of alcoholic beverage, the ship forbids "magazines that violate public decency," CDs, handcuffs, paint thinner and axes, among other items. That's right, those looking to bring their battleaxe — a vacation must-have — aboard will have to do without. The cruise line also bans the obvious items, such as guns, swords and other types of weaponry. It additionally bans paint thinner, tear gas and soldering irons aboard the vessel.

"Aroya Cruises prides itself on offering a remarkably Arabian cruise experience and adheres to the laws and regulations outlined by the Saudi government," Aroya President Joerg Rudolph said, according to The Independent. "As is standard with all international cruise lines our primary priority is the safety and security of our guests and we take this very seriously. We look forward to welcoming the first passengers on board to experience our exceptional facilities and warm Arabian hospitality."

As for the dry nature of the cruise, Aroya intends to have a VIP lounge that serves coffee and fruit juice. But the cruise won't exactly be bone dry; MSC Cruises shared that alcohol will be available for guests to purchase in international waters. During its first voyages, the Aroya will sail from its initial port in the Red Sea, Jeddah to Aqaba in Jordan. The vessel will additionally venture to two Egyptian ports: Sharm el Sheikh on the Sinai Peninsula and a port south of the Suez Canal, Ain Sokhna. The outlet reported that passengers will be able to drink beer in Egypt and Jordan. Yet, it's entirely possible these liquor laws aboard the Aroya might change.
