Mountain State Spotlight is excited to announce that Tre Spencer has joined the organization as a fellow.
As a native Ohioan born and raised in Toledo, he has developed a vested interest in community impact journalism, public service and nonprofit management. He will be covering an array of topics including environmental and economic development, and is looking forward to hearing from native West Virginians.
He is also a recent graduate of Ohio University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism and master’s degree in public administration. In his free time, he enjoys exploring, attending concerts, painting, hiking and cooking new recipes to try.
Tre will be coached and trained by editors, will work with our reporters as able, hone interviewing skills, and participate in editorial meetings as a part of the newsroom staff.
The Mountain State Spotlight Journalist of Color Fellowship Project has been made possible by a grant from The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation.
“Tre is a talented journalist and will be a valuable addition to our team,” said Founding Editor-in-Chief Ken Ward Jr. “We are grateful to our partners at The Greater Kanawha Valley Foundation for helping make this fellowship a reality.”
Our purpose, among others, is to bring diversity to our newsroom and create a pipeline enabling diversity in newsrooms across the state. We also believe deeply that truly great journalism requires that newsrooms have a variety of life experiences and perspectives.
About the organization: Mountain State Spotlight, founded in the spring of 2020, has one of the largest reporting staffs in West Virginia. Its mission is to help West Virginians make our state a better place by producing “sustained outrage” journalism that exposes abuses of power by government, business and other institutions.
