Angelina Jolie’s Child’s Major Change Reveals Where They Really Stand With Brad Pitt

Cutting ties. Shiloh Jolie Pitt’s name change seems to suggest a major rift with Brad Pitt, as the 18-year-old has reportedly decided to drop her dad’s last name amid her parent’s ongoing legal battles.

According to court documents obtained by Us Weekly , Shiloh filed the paperwork on May 27, 2024—which also happened to be her 18th birthday. She wants to officially go by Shiloh Jolie. While the request hasn’t been approved yet, it appears to be in the works.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt also share five other kids: Maddox, 22, Pax, 19, Zahara, 18, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 15. Interestingly, Shiloh isn’t the only sibling dropping Pitt from their name. In November 2023, Zahara introduced herself with just her mom’s last name when she joined the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha at Spelman College. And most recently, their younger sister Vivienne also chose to drop their dad’s last name. Vivienne, who is working as a production assistant on the Broadway play The Outsiders , produced by Angelina, is credited in the Playbill as Vivienne Jolie.

While none of the Jolie-Pitt kids have publicly explained why they’re changing their names, it likely has something to do with their parents’ ongoing divorce. Brad and Angelina split in September 2016 after an incident on their private jet involving their eldest son, Maddox. At the time, a source told People that Brad was allegedly “drunk” and that “there was an argument between him and Angelina.” The source mentioned that Maddox stepped in, leading to “a parent-child argument which was not handled in the right way and escalated more than it should have.”

Following the incident, Brad and Angelina were declared legally single. However, nearly eight years after their split, the pair are still hashing out the details of their divorce, custody arrangements, and ownership of their French winery, Chateau Miraval. Jolie sold her half of the French winery in 2021, however, Pitt sued her , claiming they had agreed to get each other’s consent before selling any joint assets.

At the time, Jolie counter-sued, saying such an agreement never existed and that by selling her share of the winery, she’d gain “financial independence” from Pitt and the chance to “have some form of peace and closure to this deeply painful and traumatic chapter of her and their children’s lives.”

However, the legal battles continue, as Jolie now alleges that Pitt’s “history of physical abuse of Jolie started well before the family’s September 2016 plane trip from France to Los Angeles” in a new lawsuit filed in April 2024. Without going into further details, the filing simply stated that Jolie plans to “prove through testimony, emails, photographs, and other evidence why Pitt was so concerned about his own misconduct that he blew up his own deal to purchase Jolie’s interest in Miraval because she refused to agree to his new, expansive NDA,” when the case goes to trial.

The filing went on to state, “Pitt’s unyielding attempts to control and punish Jolie continue to take a huge emotional and financial toll on her and their family.” Understandably, Shiloh’s decision to change her name could be seen as a way to find some distance from her father amid these ongoing legal proceedings.
