Cleaning the things you are recycling is essential

BECKLEY (WVNS) – When you are planning to recycle some of your stuff, cleaning is important to consider.

Believe it or not, sometimes it is important to rinse off the things you recycle. Whether it is a soup can or a carton of milk, it is advised to rinse away the residue on these items.

In the long run, it does make it easier for the items to be resold eventually. Sherrie Hunter, Director of Education for the Raleigh County Solid Waste Authority, said too much residue can cause problems down the road.

“It’s going to affect how the product is, so we’re gonna try to contain contamination. So, if you can rinse out your stuff that would be wonderful,” said Hunter to 59News.

Hunter said instead of throwing things away to sit in a landfill, consider recycling so they could be reused one day. She said it is important to rinse water bottles, soda bottles, and cans that hold food.
