Groceries aren’t cheap, but you have to eat. Therefore, it’s important to find ways to lower your bill while stocking up on necessities.

Even following a low-cost plan, the average 19-to-50-year-old male spends $301.40 per month on groceries, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Still costly, women in this age group, following the thrifty grocery plan, spend around $261.20 per month.

Andrew Priobrazhenskyi, a shopping and savings expert at DiscountReactor , saves around $50 per month with various grocery rewards programs. “For instance, I average about $20 a month in savings with Kroger rewards,” he said. “I do this by being very vigilant about their weekly specials and matching up lots of digital coupons, then stack them over the regular discounts.”

He said he also takes full advantage of Kroger’s bonus fuel points, which allows shoppers to earn extra fuel points by shopping on certain days.

Ultimately, he said the best ways to maximize grocery savings are to sign up for the loyalty program at every store you shop at and download digital coupons before you visit the store.

“It also helps to keep track of periodic goodwill promotions, such as double points days or sales that are only for members,” he said. “And above all, remember to take full advantage of their fuel rewards, as this is just one more of those massive points toward more savings.”

Signing up for grocery store rewards programs can seem like a hassle, but doing so can amount to big savings. Here’s a look at the free rewards programs of seven popular grocery chains.
