(Submitted photo/Benzie Area Historical Society) </figcaption></figure><h2 class="cci_subhead" title="CCI Subhead"><a class="chapter-anchor" id="localveteranshonored_1717189489110" tabindex="0"></a> Veterans honored </h2><p> Five veterans of the Civil War were the guests of honor at the Declaration Day program Friday. The remaining defenders of the Union belonging to the the GAR are Messrs. Mattieson, Forney, Nevius, Walkley, Simmons and Conklin, the last mentioned being unable to attend the exercises. </p><p> The veterans were escorted to the school ground by the local post of the American Legion, where the school children were gathered. </p><p> Short addresses were given by the Rev. Paulson and Rev. Hardy, both of whom sacrificed loved ones in the late war. They spoke of the thinning of the ranks of the old soldiers and a debt of gratitude for preserving the union. </p><p> The talks were interspersed with music by the fourth, six, and seventh grades. </p><p> The crowd then adjourned to the beach where services, in memory of the sailors, were held. Flowers were sprinkled &nbsp;on the water and a salute of six guns was fired. </p><p> Dinner was served by the American Legion Auxiliary at the “Tipp."&nbsp; The members of the GAR and American Legion wishes to express their gratitude to the ladies of the town who helped make the dinner a success. </p><p> Roy Ferris, commander of the local post of the Legion, acted as officer of the day. </p><h2 class="cci_subhead" title="CCI Subhead"><a class="chapter-anchor" id="theaterconstructioncontinues_1717189871673" tabindex="0"></a> Theater construction continues </h2><p> The construction of the new theater building has reached the stage wherein both masons and carpenters may work without interference, one from the other. The roof is being put on and as soon as that is completed the finishing of the interior will be begun. </p><p> The masons have to add only a coping to the face of the building and a few courses of tile to extend above the east and west sides of the roof to finish the exterior. </p><p> Considering the weather handicaps that have been encountered throughout the erection of the structure this spring, excellent progress has been made and the opening will occur very close to schedule. </p><h2 class="cci_subhead" title="CCI Subhead"><a class="chapter-anchor" id="commercialstudentswinrecognition_1717189897539" tabindex="0"></a> Students win recognition </h2><p> In final recognition of the splendid work of Helene Frederick and Florence Herman during the past year, the Underwood Typewriter Co. has awarded each a sterling silver medal. </p><p> In a recent contest conducted by the Greg Publishing Co. of New York, New York for all shorthand students in the United States, Alva Rodal's work was given honorable mention for showing a high degree of skill and a gold class pin was sent to her in acknowledgment of her work. Publication of this record of a Frankfort High School student is to be made in the June number of the Gregg Writer, a magazine which has a wide circulation throughout the United States. </p><h2 class="cci_subhead" title="CCI Subhead"><a class="chapter-anchor" id="lillypoolroomopens_1717189924503" tabindex="0"></a> Pool room opens </h2><p> John Gustafson has rented the Lilly Pool Room and opened same for business last Sunday.&nbsp; Gustafson will operate his tailor shop from this place. </p></div></body>
