Most little kids like to draw and paint, but how can you tell if your child's interest in making art is a sign of real talent? Sometimes, it can actually be pretty obvious!

A 2-year-old boy named Laurent Schwarz from Germany is making headlines for colorful abstract paintings that have earned him the nickname of "pint-sized Picasso" — and he's already reportedly selling his creations for about $7,000 each!

As People reported, Laurent's mom Lisa Schwarz said that "she noticed her son’s talent while the family was on vacation in South Tyrol, Italy, in September 2023."

“'There was a painting room in the hotel and we couldn’t get him out of it,' the 32-year-old mom said. 'Just before Christmas we set up a studio for him and he was in it all the time.'"

Lisa set up an Instagram page for her son's art, which quickly gained followers. Next, she "put some of the paintings up for sale on the website, laurents.art and it has since been snapped up by art lovers from as far afield as the U.K. and the Bahamas."

A U.S. bidder even offered $148,000 for a piece titled "The Fingers," while Laurent's very first panting, "The People," received a bid of $67,000 — but Lisa said the family hasn't decided yet if they're going to sell it.

"We are particularly attached to it , and at this point are not sure whether we will ever let it go."

The mom also explained that Laurent decides when and if he wants to paint.

"Sometimes he doesn’t feel like painting and doesn’t set foot in his studio for three or four weeks but then suddenly it grabs him and he says, ‘Mama, painting.’”

Quite an auspicious beginning for any aspiring artist ! If your own child is similarly passionate about art, there are a number of things you can to do help them on their journey.

How to Encourage Artistic Ability in Your Toddler

"The importance of exposing kids to art early in life is often undervalued," according to PBS.

"But giving young children an appreciation for art encourages exploration, self expression, logical thinking, self-esteem, imagination, and creativity. Early art experiences also teach kids to think openly, create new meaning, be more tolerant of others’ differences, and gives them the courage to take risks ."

Give your toddler a variety of art supplies — like washable paints, markers, crayons, paintbrushes, paper, and clay — as well as a space to create, and teach them to value the process over the results.

"After each art project, encourage your toddler to explore his creation in depth by making open-ended comments such as, 'Tell me about your painting.' Remember, it’s the process of creating art that young children learn from, not the end product. So no matter how tempting, never criticize or judge your toddler’s artwork."

When you can, take your toddler to art museums or galleries, and read to them from wordless picture books that require kids to analyze pictures to understand the story. You can even help them to create their own books.

Your kid's paintings might not sell for thousands of dollars, but they'll be priceless to you!
