Kevin Costner is looking back at the emotional moment he shared with five of his kids at the Cannes Film Festival last month.

In a new interview on Dax Shepard and Monica Padman's Armchair Expert podcast , the 69-year-old actor opened up about his kids -- Annie, 40, and Lily, 37, whom he shares with his first wife, Cindy Silva, as well as Cayden, 17, Grace, 13, and Hayes, 15,whom he shares with his recent ex-wife, Christine Baumgartner -- seeing him get emotional inside the screening of his film, Horizon: An American Saga .

Missing from the affair were the star's other children,Joe, 36, (whom he shares with Silva) and Liam, 26 (whom he shares with Bridget Rooney).

"I got emotional and my children were there," Costner says. "I had five of my children, two of my boys were in tuxes and my three little girls were there all dressed up and they were watching too. And they got a little startled by it, my son had not ever seen me be that emotional."

Costner, who is the writer, director and producer of the film, was greeted with an 11-minute standing ovation inside of the screening. The Bodyguard star recalls his eyes being "filled" as the 2,500 people in the audience celebrated the film that has been in the works for three decades.

"There was a hesitation," he tells Shepard about embracing his emotions. "I was holding back because here's the camera and I could see this 100-foot screen behind him and that's me and I looked and I could see my eyes were full and I thought, 'Good f**k...just stop crying.' But I walked backwards and finally, I thought I should bringthis to a stop. I didn't know there was gonna be remarks. I didn't know that was expected so I guess I was a little caught there too."

Costner and his children took the carpet together at the festival. The actor and his sons looked dapper in matching tuxedos, while his daughters each wore spring-themed gowns. At one point, the group all coordinated in black shades. The Costner kids were also on hand before the screening as the actor wasawarded the Order of Arts and Letters from the Minister of Culture.

Horizon: An American Saga is set in the pre-and-post-American Civil Warperiod, depicting the expansion of the American West. All in all, Costner's ambitious project will total four films. Chapter One will hit theaters June 28, followed by Chapter Two on Aug. 16.

Last month, Costner spoke with ET and revealed Hayes' special connection to the project and how he inspired him to get to work on it.

"I named him after the character I play in this. My character's name is Hayes Ellison," Costner told ET. "And I named Hayes that character. So I was watching him grow up and I was thinking, 'Man, I better get with it and make this movie.'"

The Oscar-winning actor revealed that his son didn't have to audition for the role. While that's an unconventional take for the star, Costner gushed about Hayes' work and dedication to the film.

"I captured him and I brought him on, and he's very good in this small part that he's done," Costner raved. "If you see it, I think he has an impact on the movie."
